History of location - THE SCHIECENTRALE  in Rotterdam

The Schiecentrale in the Lloydkwartier in Rotterdam is a former power station that has been transformed into housing for film and television producers, IT workers and artists. At the beginning of 2008, more than 80 companies are working alongside and with each other.

The former power station was built in 1904 as an electricity factory under the direction of Gemeentewerken Rotterdam.

The building is a national monument and was renovated in the 90s and converted into a film studio complex. There are now several film production companies, and there are 2 large film studios present. Watch out for all episodes of the VARA series!!! are included here, as well as series like Canopy & Canopy, Bergen Binnen, Raymann is Laat, Idols, and films like Soul Assassin, Storm in my head, no Trains No Planes, Claim, Suske en Wiske, Kort Rotterdams, De Ronde van Rotterdam, Buren, and Whale Songs.

In 2008 the complex was completed with a number of new construction projects.
Since 2007 RTV Rijnmond has also been located on the campus in a new building (Kraton 230), the hotel-restaurant-café STROOM is located at the front corner, and behind the studios a 54 meter high and 150 meter wide tower has been built with office space for more AV companies and housing units.

The architect of this transformation, re-use and expansion of the Schiecentrale is Robert Winkel, Mei Architects and urban planners.

The Schiecentrale was built in 1904 and was the first electricity factory in Rotterdam.

The Schiecentrale is located in the Lloydkwartier and overlooks the Schiehaven. Around 1900, the Schiehaven, St. Jobshaven and the Parkhaven. The Lloydpier, on which the Schiecentrale is located, owes its name to the shipping company Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd.

The Schiecentrale is a multifunctional Assembly building and partly National Monument. The complex consists of seven parts and covers approximately 36,000 m2 of FVO. It is currently a breeding ground for creative companies with, among other things, hospitality, two professional film and tv studios and a hotel.

The combination of office spaces, homes and housing units brings more life to the area, which in recent years has become the centre of the creative industry of the city of Rotterdam.

In 2008 the building was completed with a number of new construction projects. The design of this transformation, re-use and expansion is from Mei architects and planners.
The Schiecentrale in the Lloydkwartier has become the property of Dudok Groep in Dordrecht. The iconic building was transferred by the municipality of Rotterdam on 21 december 2018 after a comprehensive, public sale process
It is all information, which helped me with research and future work of concept in Schiecentrale

The Schiecentrale is located in the Lloydkwartier in Rotterdam, at the foot of the Euromast. The Schiecentrale once supplied the port of Rotterdam with electricity. Now the old power plant is very suitable as a conference, meeting, presentation, dinner or party location.

The monumental Turbinehal is the largest space of the Schiecentrale (800 m2). The space has the original elements of the old power plant such as the goods lift and the robust lifting bridge. Where in the past energy was generated for the port and local residents, today the energy is buzzing with events of all shapes and sizes.

The number of maximum people depends on how your event is organized. The Turbinehal is suitable for a maximum of 800 people for a drink / reception / party and in combination with the neighbors of Avontura even to expand to 1500 people. If you prefer a conference, the maximum number of people is 350. For a sit-down dinner, you can take a maximum of 400 people into account.

In addition to the Turbinehal there are also 2 break-out rooms. The Switch Room and Machine Room are suitable for meetings, break-out sessions, workshops, presentations for up to 100 people.
About Schiecentrale Events
Schiecentrale 4B is the final block in the redevelopment of the former Schiehaven power plant and surroundings. The combination of office space, residential units and live-work units brings even more life to an area that in recent years has blossomed to become the hub of the creative industry in Rotterdam

Schiecentrale 4B consists of a spectacular new building that wraps around the north-western sides of the old Schiecentrale plant. Like a small city, the new complex offers a variety of housing types that cater for self-confidant people active in the creative industry and who are attracted to the harbour atmosphere that the area still breathes. The scale and size are in keeping with the metropolitan docklands context. The shape chosen for the slab means that every residential unit enjoys views of both the River Maas and the city of Rotterdam
mixed-use building
The new building contains 55,000 square metres of programme, 7000 of which is office space.

There are also 156 live-work units whose floor-plans can be arranged as desired, and twenty ground-access quayside houses each with 3.5 floors.

Additional amenities consist of a supermarket (2000 square metres),
a gymnasium (600 square metres),
400 parking places in a supervised garage,
and a semi-public deck of 3000 square metres.

A sun terrace, podium, playground and lunchtime supervision facility for schoolchildren complete the programme
Programme
The most distinctive feature of the project is the height of the building, a 50-metre-tall slab that stretches for a length of 130 metres and rises above the former electricity power plant. The 11-floor structure contains office space and live-work units that are accessible from a gallery faced in a specially woven stainless-steel screen. Attached to the gallery are storage units, which are normally hidden away in the basement, but are now positioned opposite the front doors as eye-catching objects.

All spaces on the west side of the building are fitted with glazed façades. From here, occupants enjoy a spectacular view of the River Nieuwe Maas and the port. Floor-to-ceiling harmonica doors front the live-work units and can open to turn the apartment into an enclosed and sunny terrace.
Facing the river only, the quayside dwellings feature glazed façades that allow for optimal use. The rear of these popular dwellings adjoins the car park, turning them into a reinterpretation of the drive-in house: you drive into your home as it were

The free floor-plans of the living units allow residents to determine the arrangement of rooms. On account of the high level of flexibility, all technical installations in the spaces, and also on the façades of the building, are surface mounted. The complex has the character of a pure dock structure interwoven with the technology of offshore and process industries. The design strategy adopted by Mei embraces mistakes by the contractor, which are inevitable when many hands are involved in work. The result is a sturdy building that deliberately accommodates imperfections.
Schiecentrale has enjoyed considerable praise and international media attention. Self-confident residents have made their home in Schiecentrale. So too has Mei: in the summer of 2013 it relocated to the 16th floor at the top of the building. Visitors are always welcome in our office, and we would be delighted to guide anybody interested around the projects on the Lloydpier.
